Some research on Legendary Weapons in GW2
After reading a post on reddit that detailed what it would likely take to make the Unicorn Bow of Rainbow Awesomeness, I wanted to do a little digging to give people an idea of just what to expect from these types of items.
First thing I did was track down the vendor in LA that sells the Legendary Recipes. That person is Miyani. From that Wiki link, you can see which recipes she offers.
We know there’s at least 3 Greatsword Recipes; one for day, one for night, and one that’s a combination. My logical conclusion is that the ‘night’ Greatsword will require a Gift of Darkness. I could be completely wrong, but just looking at the names, it seems to make sense. I assume the ‘day’ sword is Gift of Light, and the combination is Gift of Weather. All 3 require Armorsmithing to be at max level (400).
Since that’s narrowed down, we can then use the GW2DB that’s been created from data-mining the client. Most stuff is there. We’re fortunate that the recipe for the Gift of Darkness is actually listed.
So let’s assume I’m correct. Here is what we’d need just to get the Gift of Darkness.
Ascalonian Tears coming from running Catacombs Explorable. I have yet to attempt the dungeon in the beta so I have no clue if its only 1 Tear per run, but I’m leaning towards believing it will be. Even if its 5 per run, or 10, that’s a hell of a lot of running. My first thought was that it’s the same currency used to purchase the Ghastly weapons and the armor set, but those use Emblems instead. This drop appears to be unique to this purpose.
Darksteel is made of the Orc ore +an item from the Armorsmith merchant, so we’re looking at least at 500 of this ore which has a rough level of 375. It’s endgame stuff, probably just found in Orr. Hardened Leather Sections are the exact same thing, an endgame crafting material.
And oh yea, you also need an Orb of Power, which costs 100 Skill Points.
There’s also a theory floating around on Reddit that perhaps it requires multiple recipes in order to complete one weapon (since the Mystic Forge requires you to put in 4 items in order to get 1. So if that holds true, you’re looking at the Orb of Power + the Gift of Darkness + 2 other recipes. If the same patterns hold true in regards to what it takes to make the Gift of Darkness, you’re looking at running 3 dungeons a number of times, with one run taking multiple hours to complete
So yea, a huge time sink. Let the ‘OMG GRIND’ qq commence. Bask in the tears.
